Beware Ticks in Bracken

Beware Ticks in Bracken

Once a tick finds a host (such as a human, a pet dog or cat, a deer, or a rabbit) and finds a suitable site for attachment, the tick begins to burrow with its mouthparts into exposed skin. Tick mouthparts are barbed, which helps to secure them to the host.
After a tick bite, individuals may develop any of these symptoms that may be due to the pathogen(s) that the tick transmits during its bite:
flu-like symptoms, fever, numbness, rash, confusion, weakness, pain and swelling in joints, palpitations, shortness of breath, and nausea and vomiting.
If Lyme disease is diagnosed in its early stages, it can be treated with antibiotics, and the outlook for the condition is excellent. Most people will make a full recovery within a couple of days…problem is…quite often you don’t even know you’ve been bitten by one!

Molly Girl

Molly Girl

Hi Everyone,

This is a public service announcement from my puppy girl. My Molly girl has been diagnosed with Lyme disease. :-( We caught it before any symptoms showed up and have her on antibiotics, so she should be fine, and we’ll just need to watch her and have her tested yearly to to check her antibody levels. If you have a dog, no matter where you live, get your dog vaccinated for Lyme disease. I was under the impression that it was not an issue in the Pacific Northwest (so I never had her vaccinated, but it is; not as bad as on the east coast, but it’s still there. Once the animal has the disease, there is no getting rid of it, although it is much easier to keep it in check these days. I’m not sure what the case is with cats, but I would check on vaccines for them as well.
