Dog Diseases- Possible Symptoms and Precautions

by Janice Kumar

It is normally difficult for a dog owner to understand if the pet is sick. However abnormal behavior, aggressive posturing, lack of diet can point towards a disease.

There are many symptoms which can be looked at and are indicative of a disease. However these symptoms and pointers are only indicative and a visit to a vet is necessary to understand and clarify the problem or disease.

  • Loss of hair and dull fur would normally indicate a poor diet, or fungus or parasite infections. Dull fur can be caused by an improper diet lacking essential minerals and nutrients. Worm infestations can also cause hair to fall. At times, loss of hair can simply be a result of old age.

  • If you find that the pet dog is raising its hair without enough provocation, then the cause may not be agitation. You may instead, look for sores, pimples or allergies. These may be causing a skin rash causing the dog to raise its hair.

  • The nose leather of a healthy dog is normally wet and cold. If you find it is dry and warm, it may indicate a problem.

  • A dog licking its nose continuously may indicate an injury to the tongue or a cold.

  • A dog frequently swallowing, would normally indicate a sore throat.

  • As in a human, frequent sneezing and coughing can indicate the onset of a cold or tonsillitis. If the same is accompanied with a raised temperature, it may indicate distemper.

  • An old dog may suffer from chronic coughing. However, this may not indicate a cold but rather a weak heart.

  • Tear eyes can indicate conjunctivitis or something foreign in the eye of the dog.

  • Pale lips or pale eyes can indicate blood loss or food poisoning, so they should be taken seriously.

  • If your dog, keeps tilting its head, it may indicate an inflammation in the ear canal of the dog. This is not to be confused with the dog tilting its head, listening for unusual sounds. Constant shaking of the head can also indicate an ear infection requiring a visit to a vet.

  • A dog dragging its rear requires a visit to the vet as it normally indicates an itchy anus or an inflamed one.

  • Frequent scratching indicates, parasites in the dog fur.

  • Swelling in the mouth indicates bug or insect bites.

  • A continuous fever requires attention and indicates a running infection in the body.

  • Vomiting can indicate motion sickness, over eating or food poisoning depending upon the intensity and circumstances.

  • A dog with diarrhea without fever must be treated for fluid loss and given light food. Diarrhea that does not clear up in three days needs a vet.

  • Dark urine can be caused by certain foods or may indicate illness.

  • Blood in the urine is a danger sign and needs a rushed visit to the vet.

  • Blood in the stool can signify food poisoning.

The above symptoms are not exhaustive. Suffice it to say that anything out of the ordinary requires care and attention. A dog is like a member of the human family requiring care and love. A healthy dog is a joy to be with. A sick dog can cause complications and infections in the family so it needs to be treated as soon as possible.

Signs and Symptoms of Dog Diseases - Dog Lyme Disease

What is canine Lyme disease? This is a condition that has affected thousands of dogs every year. This is not specific only to dogs – humans and other pets can contract this disease. While it is generally not fatal in nature; it can cause extreme pain to the canine and possibly bring severe damage to him when left untreated for any length of time.

Lyme disease is caused by a bacterium called Borrelia. It is transmitted through deer ticks and is more prevalent in certain areas in the United States. This feeding tick secretes enzymes to keep the host’s blood from clotting and it is this particular enzyme that causes the dog to be sick. If the tick is removed within 48 hours, the spirochete is not transmitted and the dog will not get infected.

You can avoid having your pet suffer from this ailment by being alert to signs and symptoms of dog diseases. Certainly, there are symptoms we can watch out for.

Typically, the infected dog will have fever of 103 to 105 Fahrenheit in the earlier stages of Lyme disease. He will also lose interest in food. While fever and loss of appetite are common signs and symptoms of dog diseases, when coupled with other factors related to dog Lyme disease, it is reasonable to conclude that the canine is indeed suffering from this condition.

The most common indicator of dog Lyme disease is perhaps limping and lameness. Many times, Lyme disease has been misdiagnosed as a case of arthritis. The limping may shift from one limb to another and can also leave suddenly, only to reappear after weeks or months later.

These arthritis-like symptoms are usually accompanied by the swelling of the lymph nodes. Lymphadenopathy means ‘disease of the lymph nodes’ and will manifest together with the other signs. When the tick has invaded the dog’s bloodstream, the infection will be carried to other body parts and would usually be localized in joints. When the pain is not confined to just the joints and limbs, the disease is in its progressive stages.

Severe pain throughout the whole body is an indication that the disease is already widespread and has affected the dog’s neurological system. The more critical cases of Lyme disease will cause heart and kidney problems, as well as complications in the nervous system of the dog.

If your canine has been exhibiting dog Lyme disease symptoms, visit the vet immediately to obtain a diagnosis. Take note of when your dog has been exposed to ticks or if you have seen any of these parasites on your dog lately. If your dog has been previously vaccinated for ticks, his immune system will be able to fight off this disease on its own.

Lyme disease is easily treatable; but vaccination and grooming your dog regularly will help prevent any infection in the first place. See your vet for concerns for any behavioral and physical changes in your dog.

Being vigilant about dog Lyme disease symptoms will keep your pet from having to suffer from this unfortunate condition. Discover valuable information on signs and symptoms of dog diseases that can help save your pet’s life at HealthyHappyDogs.com.

Dog Distemper Symptoms

dog distemper symptoms

Canine distemper virus (CDV) is an airborne type and highly contagious viral disease that is often fatal and can affects the respiratory, urogenital, gastrointestinal, optic nerves and central nervous systems.
Canine distemper is closely related to measles in human so if human has vaccine and immune to measles then they will also has immune to dog distemper. However there is a report that humans can possibly be infected with dog distemper disease but will show no signs or symptoms at all.
Large number of animal species and weasel-like animals such as lion, ferrets, foxes, wolves, coyotes, skunks, wild hogs, badgers, raccoons, pandas etc. can also develop this type of diseases. Dog distemper cannot affect or pass on to cat except other problems like skin irritations, mange, fleas, etc. Cat distemper is known as feline panleukopenia.
Puppies between 3-6 month of age are most susceptible to diseases infection and may suffer from more serious illness conditions such as inflammatory illness of the lung (pneumonia) and acute inflammation of the brain (encephalitis) when compare with older dogs. Around 15 percent of canine inflammatory central nervous system diseases are caused by canine distemper virus (CDV).
Nursing puppies has lower chance of CDV infection because a certain degree of immunity is passed down to puppies by colostrum-milk but this can only be done by giving colostrum-milk during the first 8-24 hours after birth.
Older dogs has little or no opportunity to become infected or exposed to the CDV virus because of the immunity build up but however there is a case that 7-8 years old dog has been infected with distemper.
Seasons has direct effects on the spread of dog distemper virus. Summer season and warm weather can force CDV to become dormantand lower their prevalence rate while CDV can be most virulent during early spring, fall and winter season.
Dog distemper incubation period ranges from 3-21 days in approximation and may be longer depend on other factors such as seasons, temperature etc.

Symptoms and Treatments For Dog Skin Diseases

Skin diseases on dogs are one of the most common health problems all dogs have. And, this can be a big headache for owners if these diseases are not treated properly and immediately. They will not only affect the appearance of your dog, but also create nuisance to the dog itself and also humans. There are several types of skin disease that are prone to happen to your dogs. Skin diseases might due to allergy, hygiene, weak immune system or attack from mites. Some of the symptoms can be easily detected especially when your dog experience itchiness at a particular area and keep on scratching it. Fool smell and hair loss are some of the other common symptoms. In this article, you can find out some of the common skin disease, each of the symptoms and general treatment methods. The skin diseases are categorized into 3 sub-categories: Flea Allergy Dermatitis, Immune-mediated Skin Disease and Infectious Skin Disease.

Flea Allergy Dermatitis is the allergy of dogs towards the saliva of fleas. The bite area will become slightly swollen and itchy. Your dog will tend to always scratch and bite on that area and resulting hair loss. Identify the problem due to flea by checking on the fur of your pet. If you can find lots of small black dots on the fur, those are the flea feces. Immediate treatment is to select flea repellent products with Etofenprox, Pyrethrin or Permethrin. They not only kill the fleas but also repel them. Bathe your dog regularly with flea repellant shampoo. Fleas tend to infest moist and shady areas. Clean and spray insecticide with Pyriproxyfen or Methoprene to your dog’ corner to kill of fleas and destroy their eggs and larva. Keep the infected dogs away from other. Repeat the above procedures until your dog is flea-free.

Immune-mediated Skin Diseases are maladies result from irregular activity of immune system. These diseases are not contagious. Canine Atopic Dermatitis which is caused by hypersensitive to certain allergens such as mites, dust, pollen, mold, certain types of food, weather and etc. Symptoms of the disease are itchiness especially around the eyes, abdomen and paws, hair loss and skin darkening. Identify the allergen and keep away it from your dog. Steroids, fatty acid ailments (fish oil) and anti-bacteria shampoo can be used to relieve the itchiness. Canine Follicular Dysplasia is a genetic disease that causes the dog to lose hair. Parts on the neck area, back, hind legs and tails are placed this symptoms normally appear. Treatment for this disease is rarely successful. It happens to a dog when it is around 2-4 years old.

Infectious Skin Diseases are some of the more worrisome maladies. They are contagious to both your dogs and you. Commonly know infectious skin diseases are caused by mites which are called Manges. Depending on the types of mites, there are 3 types of them: Demodectic Mange, Sarcoptic Mange and Cheyletiella Mange (dandruff symptom). Symptoms for Manges are itchiness, sore and hair loss. Initial control by using anti-bacterial shampoo and anti-itch shampoo will help. However, it is recommended to bring your dogs to veterinarian once the above symptoms appear because they may have been infected by more severe Sarcoptic Mange.

Canine Liver Disease: Causes and Symptoms

By Ruthie Bently

Canine liver disease is the fifth leading cause of death for dogs, and it’s estimated that three percent of all diseases veterinarians see are connected to the liver.

Canine liver disease has many causes, such as physiological, physical and chemical. It can be called “prior” or “after” liver disease. An example of “prior” liver disease would be a cancer; an example of “after” liver disease is a blocked bile duct.

The liver is the second largest organ in a dog’s body (after the skin) and is the workhorse of their body. It’s a specialized manufacturing and pollution control center, and is what makes the body function properly. The liver processes food eaten, manufactures the necessary building blocks, detoxifies and recycles the blood, and gets rid of the waste created. Since the liver is connected so intricately to the biochemistry of an organism, it can make diagnosing canine liver disease difficult. Liver disease can affect many body functions and in turn the liver can be affected by many other organs and systems of the body.

If not too far advanced, the symptoms and disease may sometimes be reversed due to the liver’s ability to completely regenerate. However, the disease must be managed properly to allow this to happen. A dog’s liver can be damaged up to 80% and still function normally due to its reserve capacity; because of this capability, the disease may be too far advanced and untreatable by the time it’s diagnosed. The largest challenge facing veterinarians diagnosing canine liver disease is that the symptoms are not predictable and may not be specific. Due to the paradoxical attributes of the liver, diagnosing and treating the disease can be exceedingly difficult.

Canine liver disease has a myriad of causes, and what follows is only a partial list. Any number of traumas to a dog may result in liver disease: a hernia to the diaphragm, being hit by a car, a bruise or heatstroke. A diet that’s too high in fats can affect the liver; females are more prone to this than males. A dog with chronic infections (i.e. tooth problems) can contract liver disease. Fungal and bacterial infections can cause liver disease, as can parasites like heartworms and roundworms.

Certain drugs can cause side effects that result in liver disease, including acetaminophen, anabolic steroids, antibiotics, anesthetics, ASA, chemotherapy drugs, cortisone, corticosteroids, glucocorticoids, certain parasiticides given over extended periods, phenylbutazone and Phenobarbital.

Contact with toxins from pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, bleach, household cleaners and paint chips that may contain lead can all cause liver disease. Your dog could contract hepatitis, which is an inflammation of the liver. Cancer can overwhelm a dog’s system or metastasize directly to the liver itself and lead to issues.

Certain dog breeds are hereditarily prone to copper storage disease (a.k.a. canine copper hepatotoxicosis), a form of liver disease. An exaggerated amount of copper accumulates in their liver and if left untreated can be fatal. There’s also a chance of these breeds developing cirrhosis or chronic hepatitis.

There are numerous symptoms for canine liver disease. Jaundice is the most recognizable; a tint from yellow to orange will appear. It is most easily seen in the sclera (white) of the eye, but is also visible in the gums and skin of an affected dog. You may see more frequent urination which may also be tinged between lemon yellow and bright orange. Your dog may be thirstier or have an unquenchable thirst. Their abdomen may look distended and be uncomfortable to the touch. They may have a lack of appetite, chronic weight loss, recurring gastrointestinal issues or bloody vomiting. Their feces may be yellow or orange, a paler color than normal, or they may have bloody diarrhea with the above characteristics. You may observe strange behavior, circling, lethargy, no interest in playing or walks, or accelerating depression.

If your dog is diagnosed with canine liver disease, you should remove any toxic agents that could be involved. This includes any drugs that may harm the liver further.  If your dog is on medications with sodium or potassium, your vet may change or decrease those medications to eliminate the intake and retention of those minerals. If your dog is on Phenobarbital for seizure management, your vet may change their medication to decrease damage it may cause. Your vet may suggest distilled water to lessen the effect of minerals in the water. They may also put your dog on a special diet or prescribe a diuretic to control water retention. Your vet may suggest rest and confinement which will allow the body to focus needed resources on the healing process. If caught early and the liver isn’t too compromised the condition is reversible. Being alert to symptoms of canine liver disease, a responsible pet owner can save their dog’s life.

Dog Heart Problems Symptoms and Treatment

Dog heart problems or canine heart disease refers to problems with either the structure/anatomy or functioning of  the  heart.  The role of the heart is to move nutrients via the blood supply to various parts of the body through the arteries and capillaries, and then to remove the result of this process such as waste through the veins, which brings the blood back to the heart.

The heart is designed to send enough blood through this system so that the body can function properly. Dog heart disease is the general term used to describe any problem with this system. This does not mean that a dog has canine congestive heart failure, which is a condition where fluid builds up in the body.

Dog Heart Disease Symptoms

Dog heart disease symptoms include those that can by clinically observed and those that require special instruments to detect.

  • Clinical Heart Disease Symptoms

    • Lethargy

    • Temporary loss of consciousness  (called syncope)

    • Reduced stamina and weakness

    • Dog Respiratory Problems

      • Difficulty breathing  (Dyspnea)

      • Wheezing

      • Cough

      • Difficulty breathing when lying down (orthopnea)

      • Abdominal distention

  • Symptoms Observed as Part of Veterinary Exam for Dog Heart Problems

    • Enlarged Liver (Hepatomegaly)

    • Enlarged Spleen  (splenomegaly)

    • Slow capillary refill time (> 2 sec)

    • Pale, dry or tacky mucous membranes

    • Cool extremities or reduced rectal temperature

    • jugular venous distention or positive hepato-jugular reflux test

    • Harsh lung sounds

    • Dog enlarged hart when touching or palpating the dog

    • hepatomegaly and/or splenomegaly

    • Subcutaneous edema (fluid build up under the skin)

    • Weak femoral arterial pulse

    • Pulse deficits with irregular cardiac rhythm

    • Problems when listening to dog heart sounds (auscultation)

      • Muffled heart sounds

      • Gallop rhythms

      • Dog heart murmurs

      • Arrhythmia

Types, Symptoms and Treatment of Dog Heart Problems

There are several types of canine heart problems that can be diagnosed.  These include:

Chronic Mitral Valve Insufficiency (CMVI)

Canine chronic mitral valve insufficiency (CMVI) is a disorder where the mitral valve starts to degenerate or not work properly. This is a common condition in older small breed dogs and is the problem in 75% to 80% of canine heart disease cases. The disease causes the valve leaflets to thicken, lengthen and then shorten.

This is an inherited condition in Dachshunds and  Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and in larger breeds such as German Shepherds.  Dogs with CMVI don’t always show any clinical signs of heart disease, since the disease progresses slowly.
Symptoms can include coughing, and in later stages of the disease canine congestive heart failure.   Once it reaches this stage, then other symptoms associated with congestive heart failure in dogs include some of the symptoms listed above such as exercise intolerance and exercise intolerance.  Some dogs may experience a temporary loss of consciousness.

There is some evidence that dog heart medicine such as ACE inhibitors and beta blockers may slow down the progression of congestive heart disease in dogs.  Surgery is often used to correct any anatomical defects.  Supportive natural dog heart remedies such as Heart & Circulation Tonic, can be used in addition to conventional treatment to strengthen the circulatory system and heart during treatment and to sustain the systems health after treatment.

Cardiomyopathy (dog enlarged heart)

Canine cardiomyopathy is a disorder that refers to a problem with the  myocardial tissue.  There are several types of cardiomyopathy:

Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM): the cause of this type of canine enlarged heart is largely unknown with the exception of a few breeds:

Doberman Pinschers – thought to be a genetic cause. Accounts for 30% of sudden death cases in Dobermans
Cocker Spaniels – taurine deficiency
Boxers – caratine deficiency

Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM): refers to a thickening of the ventricular walls. The condition is rare in dogs.

Symptoms associated with canine enlarged heart (DCM)  includes respiratory issues such as wheezing or cough (72% of dogs),
weight loss, anorexia (appetite loss),extremities (limbs) that are cool to the touch, exercise intolerance, weakness, fainting or temporary loss of consciousness, restlessness at night, difficulty breathing when lying down (orthopnea),  abdominal distension (Ascites).

Treatment heart disease dog for canine enlarged heart involves the use of an ACE-inhibitor if a dog has DCM, but is not showing clinical symptoms. There is some evidence that this approach delays the onset of symptoms.  One symptoms begin, ACE inhbitors along with Pimobendan (dilates or opens up passages in the heart) and Furosemide to help with respiratory issues are used.  Salt intake and exercise are also restricted.

Natural remedies such as Heart and Circulation Tonic can also be used to help with dog enlarged heart. These types of tonics work to strengthen heart health and maintain normal function.  It also helps during the healing process.

There is a mixed prognosis for the dog enlarged heart condition (DCM) with giant breed dogs surviving for a median of 91 days, large breed dogs for a median survival time of 137 days, Cocker Spaniels have a media survival time of 300 days and Doberman Pinschers that take ACE inhibitors can survive for 4 to 6 months.

Boxer Cardiomyopathy (Boxer canine enlarged heart)

Boxer cardiomyopathy is an inherited disorder in Boxers that is characterized by dog heart arrhythmia, fainting (syncope) and sudden death. In occurs in Boxers who are between age 1 and 15, with most cases occurring after age 6. It is also calledArrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy (ARVC).  The difference between Boxer Cardiomyopathy and canine cardiomyopathy is that Boxers do not show certain symptoms that are common in other dogs with the canine enlarged heart problem such as systolic dysfunction (problems with the way the heart pumps).

Canine Congestive Heart Failure

Picture Canine Congestive Heart Failure

Boxers with dog heart problems such as  Cardiomiopathy can show no symptoms, or show symptoms such as brief periods of fainting or unconsciousness or canine congestive heart failure on the left side. If a veterinarian chooses to treat a Boxer that shows no symptoms, the dog heart medicines used are Sotalol or a combination of Mexiletine and Atenolol.  Natural heart tonics and supplements such as Heart and Circulation Tonic can also be of help during treatment and recover.

Common Dog Diseases and Symptoms You Need to Watch Out For

By Geraldine Dimarco

Canines are great pets to have and for the most part, we all enjoy the fun and carefree times with them. However, as responsible pet owners, we must be aware of common dog diseases that may cause discomfort and even death to our dogs when left untreated for long. Here are some dog diseases and symptoms to watch out for.

A common ailment that dogs, especially puppies, are susceptible to is heartworm. Heartworms are parasitic worms that are usually caused by mosquitoes and attacks the vital organs of the dog. When undetected and left untreated, the infected heart will progress to congestive heart failure. Observe the canine for cough and unusual signs of tiredness.

Parvovirus is a canine intestinal condition and is one of the deadliest and most common dog diseases. Canines catch this in unsanitary places. When infected fecal matter enters into their system, the virus spreads and shows itself right away. Significantly decreased appetite, bloody diarrhea, lethargy and vomiting are symptoms which must be addressed as soon as it manifests. Parvovirus is dangerous and fast-acting. A few days after the onset of the symptoms without proper treatment will result in the canine’s demise.

Another extremely harmful disease caused by unsanitary surroundings is distemper. There is no cure found for distemper yet and there is only a fifty percent survival rate for adult dogs that catch this ailment. Symptoms that follow distemper include diarrhea, coughing, chest congestion and abnormal discharge from the eyes and nose of the dog.

A canine viral disease that most people fear is rabies. Although it is more commonly associated with dogs, raccoons, bats and even cats are also susceptible to this disease. Rabies assaults the animal’s nervous system and is spread through saliva. During the first stage the dog will be feverish and have slower eye reflexes. It will advance to aggressive behavior and the eventual failure of the canine’s motor movements. When they do have rabies, you need to put them to sleep immediately.

The canine disease bloat is the result of the canine’s overeating. When this happens, their stomachs become twisted and it cuts off the vital blood supply as well as trapping gas. This is extremely painful for the animal and will typically lead to a quick death. Be watchful when your pet eats his meals that he doesn’t consume his food too fast. Indicators of bloat are depression, restlessness and dry heaving.

Studies show that many of our pets are susceptible to obesity. While it is not generally a fatal condition, it complicates many dog medical conditions and is harmful to its general health. Obese dogs suffer more stress in their vital organs and will be a higher risk if they ever need to be operated on. A good nutritional diet will be beneficial for their over-all health.

The above dog diseases and symptoms will help you arrest whatever condition your dog may have but establishing preventive measures is better. Keep them healthy and strong with exercise, a good diet, a clean environment and regular trips to the vet.

Common Dog Diseases and Symptoms You Need to Watch Out For

By Geraldine Dimarco

Dogs are the best pets and we all enjoy our carefree time with them. There are times though that they fall sick with common dog diseases; and we must be aware of these to be able to handle the situation appropriately. Listed are several dog diseases and symptoms you will do well to watch out for for early detection and treatment.

Heartworms are parasitic worms that infect the canine’s heart and lungs. Mosquitoes are the primary culprit of this particular ailment. Notice if the dog has cough or is showing unusual fatigue– these are signs that he has contracted heartworm. If they are untreated, the dog’s condition may worsen to congestive heart failure.

Parvovirus attacks the intestines of the canine and is considered one of the most fatal and common dog diseases for them to have. This is really painful for the dog and will frequently lead to a fast death. Be attentive during mealtimes that your dog doesn’t eat too quickly or too much at once. Some indicators of this disease are dry heaving, restlessness and depression.

Beware Ticks in Bracken

Beware Ticks in Bracken

Once a tick finds a host (such as a human, a pet dog or cat, a deer, or a rabbit) and finds a suitable site for attachment, the tick begins to burrow with its mouthparts into exposed skin. Tick mouthparts are barbed, which helps to secure them to the host.
After a tick bite, individuals may develop any of these symptoms that may be due to the pathogen(s) that the tick transmits during its bite:
flu-like symptoms, fever, numbness, rash, confusion, weakness, pain and swelling in joints, palpitations, shortness of breath, and nausea and vomiting.
If Lyme disease is diagnosed in its early stages, it can be treated with antibiotics, and the outlook for the condition is excellent. Most people will make a full recovery within a couple of days…problem is…quite often you don’t even know you’ve been bitten by one!

Molly Girl

Molly Girl

Hi Everyone,

This is a public service announcement from my puppy girl. My Molly girl has been diagnosed with Lyme disease. :-( We caught it before any symptoms showed up and have her on antibiotics, so she should be fine, and we’ll just need to watch her and have her tested yearly to to check her antibody levels. If you have a dog, no matter where you live, get your dog vaccinated for Lyme disease. I was under the impression that it was not an issue in the Pacific Northwest (so I never had her vaccinated, but it is; not as bad as on the east coast, but it’s still there. Once the animal has the disease, there is no getting rid of it, although it is much easier to keep it in check these days. I’m not sure what the case is with cats, but I would check on vaccines for them as well.
